I have been thinking about it for last few months, and in my opinion this is exactly what is happening.
But let's start from the beginning.
In July 2010 I bought my first smartphone powered with android os. While I was making decision to buy it I didn't think that it would revolutionise my attitude toward the future of the Internet, but it did.
Actually I have to say I started thinking why other devices don't have systems as android built in. I mean I'm not thinking about laptops but about devices such as Hi Fi systems or TV sets.
So what is so revolutionary about Android, well I think the main advantage is the ease of use i.e. multitouch solution, the way of getting new apps, synchronisation with your google account.
That last thing actually gives as somethink like an introduction to cloud computing, which I started to understand at the moment when I sent all my contacts from sim card to google account.
But the main topic of this post is, that are we witnessing the last breath of windows? Well, In my opinion it might be. Why? The thing is that not many peopole actually need windows to do what they do on laptops. As I see many people including me use their laptops mainly to surf the Internet, check e-mail, chat, or socialise on Facebook. all those things you can easily do using smartphone, tablet or other device where Android system is installed. In fact it doesn't have to be android but for example Apple ios. So why not windows? Microsoft even has it's version form mobile devices. Well the thing is that somehow Microsoft is a few steps behind Apple and Google.
The first step is probably the biggest one, it's is about the idea that Steve Ballmer and the company approach the idea of how the computers of the future should look like. They are still in the thinking of standalone laptop idea. I don't blame them, I thought the same just about a few months ago.
Of course there are some signals that they are trying to change their atitude to that but somehow it just doesn't work out. About 8 years ago they even were first on the market with a tablet solution, they could have taken over the leader role on the market again, but they failed. Haven't they been failing ever since the Internet boom?
In the 90's Bill Gates ignored the importance od the Internet, well i think now Microsoft is ignoring the importance of cloud computing and mobility.
Of course Microsoft, is quite a big company so they can afford to ignore the market for some time, but not forever. The invisible hand of market is stronger than that.
I have to say, that before July 2010 I was blind, and now I see and understand the whole idea of mobility and cloud computing. Actually my expectations are rising, I'd like to have android built in in my TV, maybe refrigirator. But that's a topic for another post.
